Caregiver Support

Grandparent Support Group  

Support services in kinship care situations where an individual aged 60 or over is the primary caregiver for a child no more than 18 years old. Kinship support services include respite care, education, support and training provided at locations other than the client’s residence.

Hearing Services/Adaptive Equipment  

Specialized Hearing Services for those who are hard of hearing, experiencing deafness in later years, and deaf persons. The services include: hearing loss rehabilitation for activities of daily living, group education on adjustment to hearing loss, and lip reading classes. Assistance is provided in finding devices, equipment and other resources to adjust to hearing loss. A limited number of hearing aids are also available for those most in need.

Home Delivered Meals  

Home delivered meals service is the provision of at least one nutritionally sound meal per day to persons who are dependent, aged, or physically disabled and unable to care for their nutritional needs. The unit of service is one meal delivered to the client's home that provides a minimum of one-third of the current recommended dietary allowance for the age group as established by the Food and Nutritional Board of the National Research Counsel of the National Academy of Sciences.

Kent County Senior Millage Services  

The Kent County Senior Millage (KCSM) services are available to Kent County residents who are 60 years of age or older. The millage funds a variety of services that are designed to help the older adult stay in their own home environment. Service recipients are asked to donate toward the programs to help expand services to include additional older adults. Based on a person's income, they may be asked to share part of the cost of the service. The Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan administers the KCSM.

Parkinson's Caregiver Telephone Support Group  

Gain insight into the unique problems and challenges of caring for a loved one with Parkinson’s Disease while in the company of those who are walking a similar path.  The hour long, monthly phone meetings will be a time to learn from others who are at different stages of disease progression with their loved ones, as well as to share your ideas, emotions and experience as a member of the care giving community.  This telephone support group can be accessed via a toll free 1-800 connection.

Personal Emergency Response System  

An electronic device that enables participants to sercure help in an emergency. The participant may also wear a portable "help" button to allow for mobility. The system is connected to the phone and programmed to signal a response center once a "help" button is activated. The response center is staffed by trained professionals.

Information and assistance obtaining prescription coverage. A thorough assessment will be conducted with all clients referred for services in order to determine the prescription program that can best meet their needs, including government-sponsored programs such as Medicare, Medicaid or Veteran's Benefits. Transportation - Assisted  

Transportation services are offered in order to enable individuals to gain access to community services, activities and resources, appointments and other destinations within Kent County. Transportation is provided by the agencies listed below.

Ridelink is the coordinator of the Kent County Senior Millage funded transportation and is a collaboration of six human services agencies providing transportation to adults 60 and over.
