EAST GRAND RAPIDS MAN WINS SECOND STATEWIDE SENIOR AWARD

October 2006

GRAND RAPIDS- At a ceremony in Frankenmuth, Frederick R. (Rob) Deane, M.D. received the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Claude Pepper Senior Citizen Advocate award, his second statewide award for his work with seniors. In 2004, Deane was awarded the Michigan Senior Citizen of the Year award for leadership by the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging.

Deane, a retired Navy physician, has served on the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council as Legislative Committee Chair, advocating for the tobacco tax to fund Medicaid, and as treasurer for the Kent County Senior Millage Renewal campaign. Both advocacy efforts were successful and now provide services to seniors throughout the state.

“Dr. Deane has shown tremendous support for senior issues and has proven he is a true advocate for proper medical care for the aging community,” says Tom Czerwinski, Director of the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan. “Dr. Deane uses his medical expertise to help those less fortunate and less knowledgeable have the options necessary to age independently with dignity.”

A native of East Grand Rapids, Deane also serves many organizations including; Michigan Senior Advocates Council (MSAC), Alliance for Health, Kent County Medical Society, Rotary Club of Grand Rapids, Military Officers Association of America and the Army and Navy Club of Grand Rapids, Inc. Deane spends about 40 hours per week in volunteer and leadership roles, the majority of which is spent working on topics relating to aging.
