LGBT and Aging Initiative Update

Read the latest about the LGBT and Aging Initiative This initiative is funded by a two-year grant through the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. The objective of the grant is to improve care for LGBT older adults and to help reduce social isolation.To help achieve this, AAAWM is working to create a resource guide which includes organizations who have policies or written statements stating that they will not discriminate against LGBT older adults that they work with. Taking Care to Give Care: Understanding the Importance of Self-Care on the Caregiving Journey

Do guilt or shame ever bubble up inside of you at the words “Self-Care”? Are you, as a caregiver, getting proper sleep, nutrition and exercise?  Do you allow yourself time to do things you enjoy? Richard was unable to attend the Older Americans Act Partner Meeting to receive his award, so we brought it to him. You can see a video of the award presentation here. These are a few moments captured during and after the award ceremony between Richard Clanton, the 2017 Larry Murray Award Recipient and Jackie O'Connor, AAAWM's Executive Director. They have many experiences and memories between them of the work they've done on behalf of older adults throughout the years.

Richard Clanton - 2017 Larry Murray Award Recipient

Recently, Richard Clanton, CEO of UMCH-United Methodist Community House, received the Larry Murray Award.

Named after the first Executive Director of Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, this award recognizes "excellence in Leadership, Innovation and Collaboration" of our network partners.

Thank you, Richard for your years of leadership in service to the Grand Rapids Community and our older adults.

A Matter of Balance Coach Training - Free!

Our Healthy Aging Department will be leading a Coach Training for A Matter of Balance. This free training is being offered for partners who may want to provide this program to their older adults.  A Matter of Balance requires two trained coaches lead the workshop. Coaches need not be healthcare professionals, and in fact, lay leaders are preferred. 

Date:  September 25 and 26, 2017 (Monday & Tuesday)

Time:    10 am – 4 pm 9/25; 9 am – 4pm 9/26

Location: Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan 

Lunch will be provided.

Join Us for the Senior Volunteer Fair

Senior Leadership Grand Rapids invites you to attend the annual Senior Volunteer Fair at the Grand Rapids Public Museum on September 8, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.. Join Senior Leadership Grand Rapids to learn about volunteer opportunities throughout the greater Grand Rapids area.  40+ organizations will be represented.  Attendees receive free museum admission, refreshments and parking.  Registration is required.
