What is Available for Active Seniors?

For seniors who want to stay fit, Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan provides healthy aging classes with proven results that have been designed specifically for older adults. A Matter of Balance: A Matter of Balance is a fall prevention workshop to help older adults address a fear of falling and increase activity levels. It is more than just an exercise class.  In addition to physical activity, participants lean how to get up from a fall, reduce fall risks by learning about home safety and identify habits that put them at risk for falls.

Diabetes PATH: Want to learn how to simplify all the rules of healthy eating with diabetes?  This workshop can help you do just that!  Along with learning how to develop an eating plan, modify recipes, read and understand food labels, the workshop also covers how to monitor blood sugar, ways to deal with stress and setting weekly goals.

EnhanceFitness: You can recognize an EnhanceFitness class by the relaxed atmosphere and the laughter in the room. A full hour of fun, the class focuses on endurance exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility — everything older adults need to maintain health and function as they age.  The class helps older adults at all levels of fitness become more active, energized, and empowered to sustain independent lives.

Tai Chi: Tai Chi is one of the newest healthy aging programs offered by AAAWM! This program has been proven to reduce pain and improve mental well-being. Participants will learn simple and slow movements that will help improve balance, reduce falls, gain strength and increase flexibility. Classes meet twice a week for 45 minutes.
